FTO-Mini: For Training Only
Why a mini
paddle?
Because the smallest target teaches the cleanest contact.

The idea
All sweet spot.
No forgiveness.
A full size paddle hides your misses. Hit it off center and the ball still goes over.
The FTO-Mini takes that cushion away. Its face matches the sweet spot of a standard paddle and stops there. What is left is the part of the paddle you are supposed to be hitting anyway.
Find the middle and it feels great. Miss it and you know before the ball lands.
What it trains
Small target.
Big improvement.
Instant feedback
Catch the ball off center and you feel it at once. No coach has to tell you. The paddle does.
Centered contact
With so little face to work with, your hands learn to find the middle on every dink, volley and reset.
A cleaner swing
Loose, loopy swings miss a small target. The Mini rewards a short, precise path to the ball.
Faster hands
A small face has to be in exactly the right place. Fast exchanges at the kitchen teach your hands to get it there on time.
The science behind it
Why harder
practice works.
Nobody has run a lab study on pickleball training paddles yet. These are the published findings the FTO-Mini is built on, and what each one means for your practice.
The challenge point
Making a task harder lowers how well you perform during practice, but up to a point it raises how much you learn. The right amount of difficulty rises with your skill.
The Mini is supposed to feel hard. Mixing it with your regular paddle keeps the difficulty where it helps.

Equipment teaches
A 2025 review of 35 studies on modified tennis equipment found that changing rackets and balls improved control and technique while players were learning the game.
The tool in your hand is part of the lesson. Change the tool and you change what the session teaches.

New tool, new movement
Nine junior tennis players served with three racket sizes. Ball speed and serves in did not change, but how their bodies moved did. The authors suggest that serving with a different size racket now and then can shift technique without a word of coaching.
A different paddle changes how you move, right away. That is the effect the Mini is built to use.

Switch your tools
Sixteen youth hockey players who alternated light and heavy pucks for 12 weeks raised wrist shot speed 13 percent and shooting accuracy 14 percent.
Changing the tool, then changing back, makes your skill adapt. That is why you alternate paddles.

Borrowed from the batting cage
Hitters shrink
the barrel.
Baseball has trained this way for years. Hitters take practice swings with skinny bats, some with barrels as thin as an inch and a half, and with short bats that leave almost no margin for error. The only way to make contact is to square the ball up.
The best of those bats are built to feel like a game bat, so the skill carries over. It is the same reason we tell you to match the weight of your FTO-Mini to the paddle you play with.
This is coaching practice, not a published study.
Then pick up
your real paddle.
The switch back is the easy part. The Mini has kept your contact in the sweet spot the whole session, so your regular paddle feels huge and the middle is right where you left it.
Train small. Play big.
How to use it
Drill with it.
Expect it to be frustrating at first. That is the paddle doing its job. Start slow, keep the drills simple, and mix your regular paddle back in so the feel carries over.
Dinks
Cross court and straight ahead. Count how many you can keep in the kitchen without a mishit.
Fast hands
Stand at the kitchen line and trade volleys. The small face trains reflexes and accuracy together.
Targets
Pick a spot and hit it. Serves, drops and resets, one target at a time, until the contact is clean.
For Training Only
